- Design guidelines for map mashups visualizing point data
School of Engineering | Doctoral dissertation (article-based)(2015) Korpi, JariMap mashups consisting of a background map and overlaid thematic information from different sources are today common map products, and they are used for different purposes ranging from applications for domain experts to maps created by ordinary people. Despite this prevalence the efficient communication and use of map mashups is not widely studied, and cartographic textbooks do not give guidelines for designing them. This dissertation is the first step to fill this gap by investigating the visualization of map mashups consisting of a back-ground map and point symbols overlaid on top of it. Three design issues that are relevant for map mashups are studied: 1) the design of pictographic symbols, 2) the management of over-crowding of the symbols, and 3) the visual highlighting of the symbols in an interactive application. The design issues are studied by a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the aim was to produce theoretical knowledge from the three design issues and to use this knowledge for formulating practical guidelines for achieving good map mashup products. The results concerning the pictographic map symbols indicate that a set of universal qualities define the success of all pictographic symbols. This dissertation provides ten qualities that the symbols should possess as well as practical guidelines for achieving the qualities. In addition to maximizing the universal qualities, the users of the symbols should be taken into account in the design, because the cultural background of the users affects the comprehension andvaluation of the symbols. This dissertation provides a model that identifies the tracks via which the cultural background affects the comprehension and valuation of the symbols. These tracks are based on differences in code systems, conceptual models and aesthetic judgments. Also, guidelines for symbols for intercultural use are proposed. The results concerning the over-crowding of symbols indicate that symbol occlusion decreases the efficiency of the map, and that the design and visual variables of the symbols affect the occlusion tolerance. Therefore, symbolization is a valid method to manage the effect of overcrowding. However, symbolization is a usable method only to a certain degree, and other methods may be more suitable for some situations. The suitability of the methods for a specific map mashup depends from a set of requirements that are set by the purpose of use of the map. This dissertation provides a table that can be used to choose a suitable overcrowding management method for a specific map mashup. The results concerning the highlighting of symbols indicate that the most successful strategy for highlighting is to increase the saliency difference between the highlighted and non-highlighted symbols.
Piktogrammien suunnittelussa on oltava huolellinen, sillä vaatimus kulttuuririippumattomuudesta on tärkeässä roolissa kansainvälisessä kriisinhallinnassa. Suunniteltuja symboleja on testattava mahdollisimman laajalla joukolla eritaustaisia käyttäjiä. - Ilmastomallinnuksen tulosten visualisoinnin kehittäminen

A1 Alkuperäisartikkeli tieteellisessä aikakauslehdessä(2013) Schmidt-Thomé, Kaisa; Haybatollahi, Mohammad; Kyttä, Marketta; Korpi, JariStudy of the environmental outcomes of urban densification is a highly context-dependent task. Our study shows that collecting and processing place-based survey data by means of the softGIS method is clearly helpful here. With the map-based internet questionnaire each response remains connected to both the physical environment and the everyday life of the respondent. In our study of the Kuninkaankolmio area (located in the Helsinki metropolitan region) the survey data were combined with urban density variables calculated from register-based data on the existing built environment. The regression analysis indicated that the participants in the survey preferred the same density factors for their future residence as they enjoyed in their current neighbourhood. In the second analysis we related the densities of planned infill developments with the interest respondents had shown in these projects. The results show that new and even quite dense infill developments have been found to be rather attractive, with them often being viewed as interesting supplements to the current urban texture. These findings contribute to the ongoing scientific discussion on the feasibility of densification measures and encourage the Kuninkaankolmio planners to proceed, albeit carefully, with the planned infill developments. - A spatio-temporal population model for alarming, situation picture and warning system
Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(2009) Zhang, ZheTraditional Geographical Information System (GIS) applications describe reality in a static manner: the time dimension is not taken into account. In real life, most phenomena change with time. That is why spatio- temporal models have become more important in the GIS field. My research topic is a spatio-temporal population model which calculates the amount of people in a certain area at a certain time. The mode is part of the alarming situational picture and warning system for CBRN and natural disaster incidents (UHHA) project, which is funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and lnnovation (TEKES). Several other organisations are involved in this project, such as Valtion Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus (VTT), the Finnish Meteorological lnstitute (FMI), lnsta Ltd, Helsinki University and Finnish Chemicals Ltd. The goal of the whole project is to set up an alarm, warning and information exchange system that rescue personnel can use in the event of an emergency. A chemical accident in Kuusankoski is selected as a study case for this research project. Finnish Chemicals Ltd is a company which produces hazardous chemicals such as chlorine. chlorine dioxide. hydrogen. and sodium. In the event of a chemical leakage accident. the Finnish Meteorological Institute is responsible for creating a dispersion model to identify the risk area. This risk area will be the location input of the spatio-temporal population model. The model provides information about how many people are located inside the risk area at a certain time. The whole system architecture is designed by VTT. The data used for implementing the population model should he available for every municipality in Finland. In this case. the Kuusankoski base register data (Building Information System) and Digiroad data are used. The model is implemented in the Java programming language with the help of the ArcEngine API. - Vapaaehtoisten tuottama tilanne- ja paikkatieto kriisinhallinnassa
