Item Diffusion of new knowledge into the built environment companies(2013) Korhonen, Heli Kristiina; Sivunen, Matti; Salonen, Anssi; Maankäyttötieteiden laitos; Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu; School of Engineering; Junnila, SeppoReal estate and construction industry (REC) have been criticized for not being as innovative as other industries. This can be seen in the fact that REC industry has failed in adopting innovations that have been successful elsewhere, and that companies in the field have poorly developed Research and Development activities. Efforts have been made to improve these activities in Finland, and one of these efforts is RYM Ltd, which is a Strategic centre for Science, Technology and Innovation of the built environment in Finland. Two of RYM Ltd's research programs create a research cluster of more than 40 participants each and are worth together about 41 million euros. Potential problems that affect the diffusion of new knowledge from the research institutions to the companies in this network, can affect the quality of research, and the direction of the Finnish REC sector in many ways. The research problem: How the research result documents can be diffused into the companies and to the right people so that the number of people reading the result documents rises and the new knowledge can be utilized effectively in the companies? The main research question: How to diffuse research result documents into the built environment companies? To find out how the research results are diffused currently and to find an answer to this problem literature was reviewed, over 10 interviews were executed, workshops were held, reader data of the programs newsletter were collected, and a survey for over 250 participants was generated. Companies need new research results in order to be innovative and evolve. From the research results, it is clear that a blockage between research institutions and companies is created due to the fact that the persons in charge of the research programs don't have time to read the result documents they are supposed to diffuse forward. For example, only 8.4 % of the research program members opened the abstracts of research documents presented in the programs newsletter. This disables the knowledge creation circle in a multiparty research organization. Consequently, the knowledge cannot be utilized in business. Therefore, adjustments to the knowledge diffusion processes of Indoor Environment research program were made and tested. For example, a summary format made according to Lean methodology was introduced and language adjustments as well as improvements to the programs newsletter were made. With these actions the diffusion of knowledge was improved in the tested multiparty research program.Item Pilkotut toimitusketjut rakennusteollisuudessa(2011) Korhonen, Heli Kristiina; Luoma, Tuuli; Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu; Vitikainen, Arvo
