- Operation of floor heating under dynamic thermal loading conditions
Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2020-10-19) Kattelus, JuhaFloor heating is increasingly used as the primary heat transfer system in newly built residential apartment buildings. A common conception in the building industry is that embedded floor heating systems adjust poorly due to high thermal mass and slow response time. The operation of a type-A floor heating system in different fluctuating thermal loading conditions is analyzed in this study. The goal is the future improvement of the floor heating system performance. The operation of the floor heating system was simulated using IDA-ICE building performance simulation software (version 4.8 SP1). The study focused on three thermal loading conditions: fluctuating outdoor air temperature, radiative solar load, and internal load. A reference year and two synthetic climate cases were simulated on a subject building. The building was a concrete structured residential apartment building. The studied properties of the floor heating system were system performance, controllability, and comfort. The operative temperature remained inside the thermostat control range most of the floor heating operation period. Around 1 °C of floor heating related overheating did happen during spring days that had high solar radiation. The self-regulating effect helps the floor heating system to adjust quickly. Fluctuating internal load or outdoor temperature did not cause problems for the control of the floor heating system. The thermal environment remained comfortable during all simulated cases. The comfort parameters were at best values during high operative temperatures and at worst during low temperatures. - Rikastesiiloryhmän rakenteellinen suunnittelu
