Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Bachelor's thesis(2013-05-17) Kalpala, Karli - Transforming Project Complexity into Management Practices: A Study of Supplier Management in Complex Project Environments
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2015-06-10) Kalpala, KarliOperations at Åsgard natural gas deposit located in the heart of the North Sea gave rise to a complex undertaking that combined dozens of actors around the world to develop, prototype and manufacture a set of unique machines that operate beneath the sea-level for decades. This master’s thesis is addressing the development, prototyping and manufacturing of one of the subassemblies, namely the subsea transformers. Solely the subsea transformer project involved twelve different actors that designed, manufactured, coordinated and assembled the numerous subassemblies that encompass the subsea transformer. These actors involved themselves in complex performance requirements, demanding material treatment practices and new product development efforts. The core capabilities to design and build these subsea transformers had been developed at ABB Transformers years before the Åsgard undertakings. These capabilities were the result of collaborative product development efforts performed together with a handful of key suppliers. The buyer-supplier relationships and the know-how accumulated within them where refined to satisfy the end customer needs within the years of the Åsgard project. The end customer, namely oil and gas industry, requires extreme quality and durability from the equipment produced but also the traceability requirements of all operations within the supply chain are extreme. This stresses the contractual governance in these pro-jects but as it will be evident from the case study the main driver for project success is the relational governance practices evident in the case under study. The ultimate complexity of the processes performed will leave any contract by definition incomplete and the source of success arises from the inter-personal and inter-organizational management practices that are characterized with high levels of trust. The management of the supplier relationships at ABB Transformers is performed by the R&D function which in general is responsible over all the subsea endeavors at ABB Transformers. The business is focused around the key personnel of the R&D team who have for years been collaborating closely with the key personnel of the subsea suppliers. These long lasting relationships have seeded the flourishing inter-organizational relationships that play a significant role in the successful supplier management practices witnessed in the case.
