Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(1974) Jalkanen, Riitta - Automaattinen jätteenkeräys aluesuunnitteluprosessissa
School of Engineering | Master's thesis(2010) Tiainen, LiisaThis thesis examines the automated waste collection system as a part of an areal construction project. Automated waste collection is well suited for high density residential and commercial areas. It increases the attractiveness of the living environment, reduces harmful environmental impacts and reduces costs m the long run. The main objective of this thesis was to create a model, which describes how automated waste collection system is taken into consideration during the planning and construction process. The implementation of new technology is made more difficult by the fact that neither instructions nor best practices exist. It is also difficult to get impartial information for the decision-makers. The model helps to find out what should be done and when to secure a good and cost-efficient implementation. Although there are some automated waste collection systems in real estate specific use in Finland, the first areal system is only just under construction. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was also to bring out the pros and cons of automated waste collection compared to traditional collection systems. Also the principles of the municipal planning have been briefly explained to help understand the model. The model has been created based on interviews and a literature survey. In the survey, the targets were chosen so that the experiences can be utilized in Finland's circumstances. The interviews were made in Sweden and Finland. The major challenges iii connection with the implementation of automated waste collection system proved to be the selection of the system and the ownership and organizing issues. The areal construction project is large and extended and venous of different actors are related to it. The problems are caused by nonexistent cooperation and incomplete flow of information. This thesis shows that choosing the supplier and the system at the earliest stage possible will guarantee that the special properties of the system can be taken into account. When the ownership and organizing issues are solved at a very early stage of the process, the responsibilities can be shared clearly. This helps in controlling the planning and implementation. The results of this study emphasized the importance of communication during the planning and construction process as well as after the implementation. The system will be used for decades; therefore, special attention should be paid to the choice of partners in cooperation. The expansion of the cooperation into the municipal level would increase the possibility to utilize the achieved experiences.
