Informaatio- ja luonnontieteiden tiedekunta | Bachelor's thesis(2010) Isotalo, Iiro - Perception of interactivity in the design of interactive stories
School of Science | Master's thesis(2013) Isotalo, IiroThe research of interactive drama is at risk of neglecting the audience experience in the study of interactive stories. In this thesis we aim to address the gap in the research field by describing how the design of the interactivity of a story affects user experience. First, we will explain how users perceive interactivity. Second, we examine the relationship between perception of interactivity and overall user experience. Third, we describe fundamental aspects that should be considered in the design of an interactive story. In this thesis we review literature on user experience in entertainment, previous user experience studies in interactive drama, and expectations of important design considerations. As a result we produce a theory promoting sensations of control and effectance in the design of interactive drama and evaluate the theory in an empirical user experience study. Our overall finding is that audience experience in interactive drama is affected by immersion and participation. To feel participating in creating the experience the user needs to feel being in control and having effectance. To promote these sensations we find the design of interactivity should focus on interesting and coherent narrative, a user interface that is easy-to-use and non-distractive, and controls that user feels confident about. The controls should immediately and permanently affect the storyline in a meaningful and surprising way making the user feel in control. The strength of this study is the ability the address the gap in the research field I proposing a theory to support inter-disciplinary discussion over interactivity and I user experience in interactive drama.
