- Framing opportunities for educational mobile applications: A qualitative research on Finnish and Indian primary schools
School of Engineering | Master's thesis(2013) Immonen, VilleThe problem of digital learning systems, such as mobile learning environments is often the excessive focus on the technology. M -learning projects are usually driven by technology companies and the applications often seem irrelevant and inconsistent for learning purposes. Therefore, besides technology experts, designing an m-learning application should involve also educators and especially the users - students. This thesis is a contribution to the interdisciplinary design of educational digital applications. Research methodology of this thesis is highly qualitative, participating education technology professionals, school principals, teachers and students from two very different education cultures, Finland and India. The objective is to create an opportunity framework on what kind of applications could be needed or useful in each country, and moreover, where and when they could be used. The target group is 10-12 years old students and their teachers in Finland and India. The research findings show that the needs for these countries vary. Finnish education is modem, applying constructivist pedagogics, whereas Indian primary education still leans in very old-fashioned and behaviouristic teaching methods. In Finland, the key opportunities are related to supporting ubiquitous (anywhere, anytime) and constructivist (problem-based, thematic, collaborative) learning, while the opportunities in India can be considered to relate more in teaching and especially managing the big classes. As Indian education is changing fast, the framework suggests so-called constructivist features also for Indian education, in order to make teaching and learning more efficient, equal and relevant. - Quality process management of an ERP implementation project to achieve technical compliance
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2022-03-23) Immonen, VilleEnterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation projects are complex and require significant resources from the organization. Historically, their success rates have been remarkably low. Therefore, there is a demand for improvements in the management of ERP implementation projects. The alignment of the technical features of the ERP software and the business requirements is one key determinant in realizing successful ERP implementation projects, and this thesis focuses on this through the RQ “How should a project management team design and implements the quality processes of an ERP implementation project to successfully comply with the technical requirements of the system?” Project management of ERP projects should engage and apply various quality processes to ensure technical compliance. The thesis applies the three generic quality processes in the scope of ERP implementation project management, namely quality planning, quality assurance and quality control. One contribution of the thesis is the unified view it provides on quality management in ERP implementation projects. During the project, the project management should address adequately the process of reshaping the business processes, which is conducted before the realization of ERP software, to ensure successful execution of these processes through the ERP solution. This is one key component that builds confidence for the project management team about ERP’s compliance. Also, project management should facilitate thorough testing of the realized ERP, including its diverse dimensions, such as functional tests and integration tests. Due to the complexity of the ERP software and its wide audience in the organization, a ollectively exhaustive test management software is highly recommended to ensure high-quality end-result through visibility to testing and its more effective management. The case projects provided validation for many of the phenomena analyzed in the literature, such as the complexity of conducting and managing business process re-engineering. The businesses are recommended to employ pilot units in ERP implementations if the structure is feasible for them. Furthermore, companies who strive to increase their overall IT capabilities with the ERP project should lay extra focus on managing the quality of the ERP system to be delivered. - Tuotekehitysprojektin suunnitteleminen yrityksen strategian ja resurssien perusteella
