- Design of phase modulator for 6G digital transmitter
Sähkötekniikan korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2023-06-12) Huang, YiningThe advent of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks necessitates the development of wireless transmitters with multi-band capability, support for wide channels, low out-of-band noise, low power dissipation, and compatibility with scaled CMOS processes. Among the different transmitter architectures, digitally intensive polar transmitters offer better flexibility, scalability, and power efficiency compared to traditional Cartesian architectures, making them a promising candidate for transmitter design. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a phase modulator for a 6G digital polar transmitter, which is designed to achieve a total resolution of 9 bits and improved linearity performance. The thesis first provides an introduction to the four different modulation methods used in transmitters and compares analog- and digital-intensive transmitters. Then, a detailed research review on the phase modulator used in polar transmitters is presented to determine the optimum candidate for the digital-intensive system. The digital-to-time converter (DTC) based modulator is implemented in a segmented architecture, which consists of a coarse tuning stage and a digitally controlled delay line (DCDL) based fine tuning stage. The schematic level design of the proposed structure is accomplished using the Berkeley Analog Generator (BAG), which offers a parameterized and programmatic design flow. Additionally, a binary search algorithm is developed to optimize the edging performance of the inverter-implemented delay line. Finally, the functionality of the phase modulator is checked by simulations with binary, thermometer, and segmented control methods.
