  • Development of a resin heat management setup and procedure for a vat photo-polymerization 3D printer

    Vat photopolymerization (VP) 3D printers are used to an increasing extent in dental healthcare. However, separation forces reduce the efficiency and reproducibility of the process, which can be partially solved by heating resin used for the printing. Additionally, heating results in higher accuracy and faster printing process. Despite the introduction of commercial printers utilizing heating, most of the used heating solutions heat resin slowly or ununiformly. This thesis develops a resin heating setup and procedure utilizing a five-step development process, and by prototyping and testing of alternatives. By comparing the result to the requirements decided, hot air was identified to be the best solution to effectively heat resin uniformly, resulting in clear enhancement of the printing process. Furthermore, it was identified that heating with red light could be further improved, which could result in a highly affordable heating method.
