The object of this master's thesis is the standardisation and development of the mechanical design process in ABB Ltd. Motors and Generators Division Synchronous Machines Unit. Therefore this thesis aims at solving challenges that are caused by the change of the Product Data Management (PDM) and the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, concerning the types of the problems arising from the design process itself, as well as mapping the best techniques. The thesis also considers the whole demand-supply process throughout mechanical design and highlights the entire process flow, the key elements of the process phases and information flows as well as the best practices related to the process phases. The survey is based on interview data and reference cases analysis. The technique used for developing the working practices and processes is 4Q. The methods include a FRAM-model for collecting the necessary data. In tum for the process handling, the standardization and phasing of the SIPOC-method is adopted. Flow charts are created to maintain the process. The thesis determines the delay issues for the defined lead-time of the design process. The result of the survey shows the required data is often incomplete. Also the level of the systems' applicability is considered as notable factor in slowing down the process. Recommendations and the tools for reducing the design time and improving the quality of the process are presented. This thesis aims to provide information for solving existing problems as in the design process itself and so in the use of the systems and thereby improve the design process.
