Item Evaluating accessibility of a psychotherapy mobile application with mental health patients(2024-08-19) Laitinen, Otto; Andersson, Anna; Fernquist, Johan; Perustieteiden korkeakoulu; Viitanen, JohannaThe need for mental health care has been rising worldwide in recent years. To address the situation, many digital interventions have been developed and proposed as a solution. However, these web and mobile applications are not currently a scalable solution, as often people with physical, sensory or cognitive disabilities, permanent or temporary, cannot use them without struggling. The accessibility of digital mental health interventions is also important for their primary users, as many individuals with mental disorders may also experience temporary cognitive impairments. This thesis researched what factors are essential for psychotherapy mobile applications' accessibility from the patient's viewpoint and what accessibility issues patients face when using mental health care applications. Using currently available literature and an accessibility-focused usability study, the thesis gathers recommendations on improving the accessibility of a mobile psychotherapy application. The study is a case study of a psychotherapy mobile application. It consisted of eight usability testing sessions with mental health patients residing in Sweden who were current users of the case company's product. The user testing sessions used interviewer observations, the thinking-out-loud method, short questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews for data collection. The thesis presents multiple recommendations for solving accessibility issues in the case application. For instance, the application should strive for a more consistent navigation design to avoid confusing patients and avoid relying on the user's memory in the booking process to make it less cumbersome. The literature review results also support the empirical study's findings: good information locatability is essential in applications designed for those with mental health issues. In conclusion, this thesis' results offer instructions on how companies and organisations could improve accessibility in mental healthcare mobile applications. The results are most relevant for the case company and other organisations with digital mental healthcare applications. Additionally, any other party developing eHealth services could benefit from these results.Item The varied use of balanced scorecards - illustrations and reasons.
